The Most Brutal Sports (In Ancient Times)

Sports have been around the world for many years (as you all may know that already). In the Ancient Times, the sports that were being played were more brutal than they are in the present times. Many sports from the ancient times are still being played 'til this day, but are just played differently. For example, Boxing has been around in the ancient times also. Although that is true, it was played very differently. For starters, they did not use gloves back in those days. They used another material but it was basically da same as having nothing at all. Boxing back in the olden days is like a UFC in the present time. Also, people have gotten beaten up way more brutal than how they do now.
Another example of a brutal sport in the olden days was a sport called Fisherman Joust. If you ask me, I would have never guessed a fish sport being a brutal sport as it was in the Ancient times. Fishermen’s Jousting was a sport in which teams of fishermen in boats would try to knock their opponents into the water. This may sound like an easy non brutal sport, but the results could be fatal. Some reasons include that many of the fishermen were often unable to swim, which means they wsould drown. Also, from them playing in animal-infested seas, the players would get eaten alive by crocodiles, alligators, etc. The players would also brutally attack their opponents with their boat poles in an attempt to disable the other fishermen and win the contest. Talk about tough love. Who said going fishing would be fun all the time?

Golf

The creation of golf is a very interesting one. Golf did not really change much since it first started. Basically the only thing that has instead of a wooden one. Tecchanged was the material used to hit the golf ball, which is a metal "stick" now, technology has changed dramatically since it was first played. Because of this, different and more stronger golfsticks can be used for the sport. In my opinion, golf is one of the most boring sports to watch. Theres not much excitement involved. The whole object of the game is to get the golfball in the hole in the shortest amount of hits you can. The person that gets the golfball in the hole the shortest amount of attempts wins the game. Also, during the sport, there basically has to be complete silence, or the players may mess up, and that may cost them the victory. Although I may not likek watching or playing the sport, it is still a very popular sport to watchall over the world. Usually when a person thinks of golf, the first player that comes to mind is a man named Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods made history in 1997 by becoming the youngest player ever to win the Masters. Four years later he took his second title, which is very impressive, and hard to accomplish. His status as a golf legend has inspired a generation of new players. Golf may be a very dull sport for me, but for others is maybe the best sport to ever be created.

NBA and MLB: Why is the majority minority?

In case you fine people havent noticed, the majority of the NBA and the MLB is minorities. Why is this? would this ever change in the future? Studies showed that During the olden days, It was not like this. The majority for both the MLB and NBA were all white people. How did this change all of a sudden? Back in the olden days, minorities were not allowed to play these sports or any sports I dont think (I am going to research on that and get back to you). Some key events led to minorities being able to play these sports. For example, for te MLB, a man named Jackie Robinson was one of the first minorities ever to play in the baseball league. He also broke a few records of his own, so its not like he was a "nobody". Events like this made minority races eligible to play in these sports. As of today, Minorities basically took over the NBA and the MLB. If you would ask me would this change again, I really dont know but I honestly doubt it. The reason is because the younger stars that would want to be in the "big leagues" are minorities also, so I dont think it would be changing anytime soon. Im not complaining anyways. Their skills and dedication really makes us enjoy the sport even more!

NFL: Why so Little Games Played a Year?

Hey my fellow sports fans. Sorry I havent updated my blog in a long time. I have been very busy with school, and didnt really get a chance to do any updating on my blog. Anyways, the thing that I would like to talk about this time around is the amount of basketball games played in a season, as well as the MLB and the NFL games being played a season. The thing that was always brought to my attention is the fact that there are only 16 games played in the NFL (not including the playoffs), and more than 80 games played for both the NBA and the MLB. I understand that the NFL is a very dangerous and brutal sport. Although thats the case, other sports can be just as brutal also depending on whatever is happening during the games. Even though thats true, The goodthing about the NFL not having a lot of games being played a season is the amount of money they receive a year for those 16 games being played. NFL players make a lot of money depending on how useful you can be on a team. Just like every sport, the better you are in the sport the more money you would receive. So I guess its not so bad after all...

Who Said Girls Can't Play?

As we all know, women did not have the same rights as men in the olden days. This includes voting, goint to war, and different roles each sex plays in a household, or any other place. One thing that has really changed as the years went by are Female sports leagues. In the past, women were not eligible to play the game because they were considered "feminine". When I have learned about this, I did not find this right at all. Ladies should be treated and have the same respect as gentlemen do. Race shouldnt matter at all (and this is coming from a male's perspective also). There are plenty females that can play sports just as good as men. For example, a sport as brutal as boxing is now not only a man sport, but a female sport also. There is a woman by the name of Laila Ali, that I am sure can beat a lot of men in boxing. Laila, the daughter of the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, has numerous medals and Championship belts under her name. She is known for being the best female boxer to ever play the game. This would be another reason as to why females could do just as much or in fact any sport a man can.
Over the past 15 years, it was said that many male sports has been eliminated to provide opportunities for women to play. In the last five years, according to the 1997 NCAA Gender Equity Study, football budgets have increased 139% while the entire women's athletics budget increases have totaled 79%. I dont find this fair to the women. 139% compared to 79% is a big difference. Luckily, with the help of us students, and the schools, this can change, and would help promote more women sports to be played in our schools in the future. I honestly think it is up to us to make this happen, because I dont think no one else would try and make this possible for the ladies.

Baseball; The Beginning

The sport of baseball was originally played first in the United States. The game has been played for about 200+ years to this date. It has been created by a man named Alexander Cartright in 1845. He made a club named the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, which was the first organized baseball team in the history of baseball. The rules of baseball havent really been changed, accept by a few "errors" of the sport. For Example, "plugging" a runner is no longer in effect in the sport of baseball today. Plugging a runner means hitting the runner with the ball to get an out. To substitute for that, there is now a player on each base to throw to to get the runner out.
It was not until the year of 1857 where the first organized baseball league was formed. This league had Fifteen other teams in it. Cartwright called the Baseball rules as the “Knickerbocker Rules” of baseball, which is now the basic rules of the game. During the time of Cartwright's age, I dont think many females played the game. He considered baseball to be a gentleman’s game. Today, the sport of baseball can be played by any sex, whether its male or female.
Baseball has been a success to everybody. Just like every other sport (im guessing), baseball had its "drought" also. Beginning in 1900, the deadball era, which lasted until 1919, was low scoring, pitcher dominated games that wasnt really entertaining for the crowds. Also, to add more insult to injury, a baseball was about three dollars at that time, which was a lot of money at that time. Because of this, One baseball was used for the whole game.

Here is a useful link that shows how the amount and the look of the baseball has changed during the years of the game. Enjoy!

The History of Soccer

Soccer is one of the most basic sports to be created. Also known as "football", it origins back to over 3000 years. Many people agree that China was the first people to make up the sport. They use to always kick a ball in a net. Soldiers from the Chinese military also use to play the sport on their free time, kicking the ball in a small net. Today, the sport of soccer is played with a lot of "passion and enthusiasm". It is basically a sport to have fun with. However, Soccer was a sport that was played very fiercely during the Medieval Times. There were towns playing against other towns that involved punching, biting, kicking and cutting into the flesh of players during the course of the game. This was very brutal to the players of the game. Because of this, there were many injuries while playing the game. These games would last the whole day. This has also been a reason why many authorities tried to ban the game. Queen Elizabeth I of England had reportedly passed a law by which the soccer players could be put in prison for a week for the foul behavior they do while playing the game. Soccer steadily grew in fame and today it is a sport played across all continents. The world’s largest spectator sport drew a television audience of 28.8 billion viewers. Soccer has come a long way since the creation of it. As of now, believe it or not, it became the greatest sport in the world.
